The Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) Van Rakshak exam consists of 100 objective-type questions carrying 100 marks, to be completed in 90 minutes. The sections include General Studies, Hindi language, and Forest Science. There is no negative marking. The exam is conducted in online CBT mode at various centres across Bihar.

Valmiki Tiger Reserve (Bihar's only tiger reserve) in West Champaran is the most important protected area to study. Valmiki National Park adjoining it is also significant. Udaypur Wildlife Sanctuary, Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary (for Gangetic dolphins, a Schedule I species), and Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary are other important protected areas. Bihar's state animal is the Gaur (Indian Bison) and state tree is the Peepal.

Bihar Van Rakshaks conduct anti-poaching patrols in assigned forest beats, particularly in areas bordering Nepal which are prone to wildlife smuggling. They enforce the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Forest Conservation Act 1980, preventing illegal logging and forest encroachment. Guards also assist in community forest management, maintain patrol diaries, and cooperate with police during anti-poaching operations in coordination with SSB for Nepal border areas.

Bihar Van Rakshaks receive a monthly salary of Rs. 18,000-25,000 under Bihar government pay scales along with dearness allowance, HRA, and other state government allowances. The position provides stable government employment with annual increments, medical benefits, earned leave, and NPS pension after retirement. Promotions to Head Guard and Forester are possible through departmental exams.

Focus on Bihar-specific GK including state geography, rivers (Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, Sone), forests, wildlife, and government schemes. Forest science topics including tree identification, forest ecology, soil conservation, and forest laws are important. Revise Hindi grammar thoroughly. Practise mathematics at Class 10 level. Take BSSC-pattern mock tests regularly for time management. Physical preparation for the efficiency test should also be done alongside academic preparation.
