NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd) is an apex cooperative marketing organisation established in 1958, owned by member cooperative societies and the Government of India. NAFED procures agricultural commodities (onion, pulses, oilseeds, spices) at MSP, stores them, and distributes or exports them. It also implements PSS (Price Stabilisation Scheme) interventions during price crashes. A Management Trainee at NAFED handles commodity procurement planning, warehouse management, export negotiations, government scheme implementation, and accounts for cooperative trading operations.

The Marketing Management section covers marketing principles (4Ps, market research, consumer behaviour), agricultural marketing concepts (APMC, e-NAM, warehouse receipt system, commodity futures), cooperative marketing theory, supply chain management, export-import procedures, and NAFED's specific programmes like Honey, Moringa, Spices, and Ethnic Food marketing under One District One Product scheme. Commerce section includes accounting basics, balance sheet reading, and commodity trade finance concepts.

Key schemes include PSS (Price Stabilisation Scheme) under which NAFED procures onion, pulses, and oilseeds during price crash; PM-AASHA (Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay SanraksHan Abhiyan) under which MSP procurement for oilseeds and pulses is done; buffer stock operations for onion and pulses; ONORC (One Nation One Ration Card) scheme logistics; and PM Kisan Sampada Yojana for food processing. Understanding of eNAM (National Agriculture Market) platform and its integration with NAFED operations is also relevant.

NAFED Management Trainees receive a stipend during the training period followed by appointment as Officers. The pay scale is based on NAFED's internal wage structure, and effective compensation is approximately Rs. 5–7 LPA for fresh MTs, with better remuneration for MBAs and experienced candidates. NAFED being a cooperative organisation, the compensation may be lower than MNCs but offers government-linked job security, exposure to commodity trading, and experience relevant to agri-business management and cooperative sector careers.

After training, NAFED MTs are confirmed as Officers and can progress to Senior Officer, Assistant Manager, Manager, and General Manager levels within NAFED. The cooperative sector experience is also valued by NCDC, NDDB, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, and state commodity federations (like HAFED, MARKFED) for lateral hiring. Many NAFED alumni pursue further studies including MBA from IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand) which has a cooperative sector management focus. Work experience at NAFED also helps in government agriculture officer exams where cooperative marketing knowledge is tested.
