The Master of Physical Education (MPEd) is a two-year postgraduate programme that provides advanced training in sports science, physical education pedagogy, sports administration, research methodology, and specialised coaching. Graduates are eligible to apply for the NTA NET Physical Education exam for college lectureships, work as Senior Sports Officers, Head Physical Education Teacher, or Director of Physical Education at institutions. MPEd is also required for PhD admission in physical education and sports science. Institutions like LNIPE and SNIPES offer highly regarded MPEd programmes under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The MPEd entrance exam is more advanced than BPEd and tests postgraduate-level knowledge. Sports Science covers exercise physiology (aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, cardiorespiratory adaptations), sports biomechanics (kinematic and kinetic analysis, technique optimisation), sports nutrition (macronutrients, ergogenic aids, weight management), and sports medicine (injury classification, rehabilitation protocols). PE Theory covers history of international sports, sports administration, coaching methodologies, and physical education curriculum design. Research Methodology covers statistical tools, research design, data collection methods, and interpretation of sports research.

LNIPE (Gwalior) and SNIPES (Thanjavur) are premier physical education universities under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and their MPEd programmes are highly competitive with thousands of applicants for limited seats. LNIPE typically has around 40–60 MPEd seats and SNIPES has similar capacity. The written test is at a high level requiring deep sports science knowledge, and the physical test component adds another competitive layer. Candidates with strong BPEd academic records, sports achievements, and research aptitude have the best chances.

MPEd graduates can pursue: NET qualified college lecturer positions in physical education at government degree colleges; Sports Officer and Senior Sports Officer positions in state governments; Assistant Director (Sports) and Deputy Director (Sports) in state sports directorates; Sports Science Officer at SAI centres; NIS Diploma (advanced) in coaching; PhD in Sports Science or Physical Education; positions in sports management at national federations, IPL franchises, or international sports organisations; and sports broadcasting and journalism roles requiring technical expertise.

The physical proficiency test at MPEd entrance is similar in structure to BPEd (running, jumping, throwing, sport skill demonstration) but the performance standards expected are higher given that candidates should already be BPEd graduates with professional physical education training. Some institutions test sports-specific advanced skills more rigorously at MPEd level. The physical test typically carries 25–35% weightage in the final merit. Candidates should maintain competitive athletic fitness despite being several years into their degree programme.
