MP Forest Service officers are responsible for management, conservation, and protection of forests in Madhya Pradesh, which has one of the largest forest covers in India. They supervise forest guards and rangers, enforce Forest Act provisions, manage wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, and implement afforestation programs. Madhya Pradesh's Tiger Reserve network (Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura) is managed by Forest Service officers. They also handle forest revenue, timber auction, and encroachment prevention.

Important forestry topics include forest ecology, types of forests found in MP (tropical moist deciduous, dry deciduous), silviculture practices, wildlife management, and forest protection methods. Female candidates require minimum height of 150 cm. A Physical Endurance Test (PET) is conducted which includes running, jumping, and physical tasks simulating forest patrol conditions. Medical examination is also mandatory before final appointment.

MPPSC Forest Service Mains exam allows candidates to choose an optional subject from a list that includes Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Geology, Statistics, and Animal Husbandry. The optional subject carries significant marks in Mains and should be chosen based on graduation background. Forestry as an optional is available for candidates with formal forestry education and provides a natural advantage. The optional subject should ideally complement the core forestry knowledge.

IFS (Indian Forest Service) is a central service exam conducted by UPSC that fills Class 1 gazetted posts with All India transfers. MPPSC Forest Service is a state-level exam filling Class 2 posts within Madhya Pradesh only. IFS officers serve as DFOs and above, while MPPSC Forest Service officers start at the Range Forest Officer/ACF level. The IFS exam is significantly more competitive with a larger syllabus, while MPPSC Forest Service is specific to MP's forests and regulations.
