UPCET (Uttar Pradesh Combined Entrance Test) was introduced by NTA on behalf of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) for BTech and other professional programme admissions in Uttar Pradesh. AKTU is the affiliating technical university for over 800 engineering colleges in UP. Previously known as UPSEE (Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination), the exam was rebranded as UPCET and its conduct was entrusted to NTA. In recent years, JEE Main scores have been increasingly used for AKTU admissions, so students must check the current admission policy.

UPCET Engineering covers Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and General Knowledge (Awareness). This inclusion of GK makes it slightly different from most other state engineering entrance exams. The Physics and Chemistry sections cover Class 12 CBSE/UP Board syllabus, while Mathematics includes topics from both Class 11 and 12. The General Knowledge section tests current events, science awareness, and general aptitude. Candidates should allocate dedicated time to GK preparation alongside PCM.

Yes, in recent years Uttar Pradesh has moved towards accepting JEE Main scores for BTech admissions to AKTU-affiliated colleges, reducing the exclusive reliance on UPCET scores. Students with good JEE Main scores may be eligible for direct counselling for UP state seats. However, many private colleges and some programmes may still prefer UPCET scores. Students should check the latest admission notification from AKTU and the State Technical Education Department for the most current policy.

Through UPCET/AKTU counselling, students can access top institutions including HBTU Kanpur (formerly HBTI, one of the oldest and most prestigious technical institutions in North India), IET Lucknow, Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) Gorakhpur, Bundelkhand Institute of Engineering and Technology, and GLA University Mathura. For NITs and IITs in UP (NIT Allahabad/MNNIT), JEE Main/Advanced scores are required separately.
