GATE XE has a compulsory Engineering Mathematics section (XE0, 15 marks) and lets you choose 2 optional sections from 8 disciplines: Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology, Atmospheric Sciences, and — new from GATE 2027 — Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (absorbing the discontinued standalone TF paper).

If you have a Mechanical background, choose Fluid Mechanics + Thermodynamics. For Chemical, choose Thermodynamics + Fluid Mechanics or Materials Science. For Metallurgy, choose Materials Science + Solid Mechanics. Choose based on your academic strengths.

Many IITs and NITs accept GATE XE for MTech admission in interdisciplinary areas. IISc accepts GATE XE for its Interdisciplinary Science programme. Materials Research, Food Technology, and Atmospheric Science departments commonly use GATE XE scores.

GATE XE difficulty varies by chosen sections. Engineering Mathematics (mandatory, 15 marks) is standard across all GATE papers. The optional sections like Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics are GATE ME-level difficulty.

You can appear for GATE XE regardless of your graduation branch — any BTech/BE holder is eligible. Many Mechanical or Chemical Engineering students appear for XE to have more flexible career options across disciplines.

General category qualifying marks: 35.2 (2026), 35.4 (2025) and 36.2 (2024) — the most stable GATE cutoff because the compulsory sections normalise difficulty. Your chosen optional sections decide your actual rank.

Begin with the official syllabus — GATE questions rarely go outside it. Then work subject-wise with previous year questions (10+ years), and finish with 8-10 full-length CBT mocks. Remember: General Aptitude (15 marks) and Engineering Mathematics (13 marks) are common to every candidate — 28 of your 100 marks come before the core subject even starts.
