An Operation Theatre (OT) Technician assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff during surgical procedures by preparing the OT environment, sterilizing and setting up surgical instruments, positioning patients for surgery, maintaining aseptic techniques, managing surgical equipment (electrosurgical units, suction machines, laparoscopic equipment), and assisting with instrument counts. They also maintain OT equipment, handle autoclave sterilization, manage inventory of surgical supplies, and ensure proper OT protocols are followed. OT Technicians are critical members of the surgical team and work in both elective and emergency surgical settings.

Programs available include Certificate in Operation Theatre Technology (1 year), Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology/Techniques (2 years), and BSc in Operation Theatre Technology (3 years + 1 year internship = 4 years) offered by government medical colleges, AIIMS institutes, private hospitals through affiliated institutes, and state paramedical boards. The 2-year diploma is the most common qualification for hospital employment. Government programs at AIIMS and government medical colleges are highly competitive with limited seats. The Board of Allied and Healthcare Professionals (BACHC) in some states regulates these programs.

OT Technicians are employed in government hospitals (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, state government hospitals), private multi-specialty hospitals (Apollo, Fortis, Max, Narayana Health), day surgery centers, and eye surgery centers. Government employment through state health departments and central government hospitals provides stable salaries (Rs. 25,000-40,000 per month) with job security. Private hospital salaries range from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 45,000 per month based on experience and hospital tier. International opportunities exist in the Gulf, where experienced OT Technicians are in demand in major hospitals.

Biology is the most important subject, particularly Human Anatomy (body systems, organs, positioning), Physiology, and Microbiology (sterilization, infection control basics). Physics concepts related to pressure (anesthesia machines), electricity (electrosurgical units), and optics (laparoscopic equipment, microscopes) are also relevant. Chemistry knowledge of sterilizing agents, antiseptics, and disinfectants is tested in some exams. General Knowledge about recent developments in surgical technology may be included in some state paramedical entrance exams. Scoring above 70% in Biology and Physics typically ensures competitive performance.

OT Technicians can advance their careers by pursuing BSc in Operation Theatre Technology (if they have a diploma), specializing in specific surgical areas (cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, laparoscopy), obtaining additional certifications in sterile processing (CSPDT certification), or pursuing BSc Medical Technology for broader career opportunities. Senior OT Technicians with 8-10 years of experience can become OT Supervisors or OT Managers in large hospitals. International certifications and experience enhance employability in the Gulf and Southeast Asia. Some OT Technicians also transition to sterile processing and decontamination management roles in large hospital systems.
