The TNPCB Environmental Engineer exam consists of 100 objective-type questions to be answered in 90 minutes. Candidates shortlisted based on the written exam are called for certificate verification and, for some posts, a personal interview. TNPCB's role in regulating industries under the CRZ Notification 2019 for Chennai and Rameswaram coastal zones is also tested.

Focus on wastewater treatment technologies (SBR, MBBR, MBR systems), Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) design, which are widely used in Tamil Nadu's tannery and textile clusters, air pollution control using scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators, and solid waste management including industrial hazardous waste handling. Knowledge of water and air quality standards under the Environment Protection Act 1986, ETP design parameters, and environmental monitoring instrumentation is essential.

Environmental laws form a critical part of the TNPCB exam. The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981, and Environment Protection Act 1986 are core topics. The EIA Notification 2006 (mandatory for 39 project categories) and Coastal Regulation Zone Notification 2019 are particularly relevant for Tamil Nadu given its long coastline. Knowledge of consent management procedures, show-cause notices, and legal remedies under these Acts is tested in scenario-based questions.

TNPCB Environmental Engineers are recruited in the pay scale of approximately Rs. 56,100-1,77,500 (Level 20 under Tamil Nadu Government pay matrix) with standard government allowances. The job involves field inspections of industries, sample collection and analysis, consent processing, enforcement action under pollution control acts, and EIA appraisal support. Engineers gain exposure to diverse industrial sectors including automotive (Chennai), textiles (Tiruppur), tanneries (Ranipet), and petrochemicals (Cuddalore), making it a technically rich role.
