Sahitya Akademi is India's National Academy of Letters, established in 1954, and is the highest literary body in the country. It recognises and promotes Indian literature in 24 languages including 22 Scheduled Languages and English and Rajasthani. Programme Officers manage literary events, translation projects, publication of literary works and encyclopaedias, fellowship and award programmes including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Awards, translation prize, and Bal Sahitya Puraskar. They coordinate with writers, publishers, and state governments, and manage the Akademi's extensive literary journals and documentation programmes.

The exam covers Indian Literature and Languages (history of Indian literature in major languages, major literary movements, prominent authors and their works in Hindi, English, and classical Indian languages including Sanskrit, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, and Urdu), Hindi or Regional Language Proficiency (grammar, translation, essay writing), General Studies and Culture (Indian cultural history, performing arts, fine arts, Indian philosophy, classical literature, national cultural institutions), and Arts Administration and Management (cultural programme management, grant administration, publication management, copyright basics). Awareness of current Sahitya Akademi award winners and programmes is essential.

The Sahitya Akademi Award is the premier literary honour, given annually in each of 24 languages for outstanding works of Indian literature. The Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is the highest honour, given to living legends of Indian literature (only two at a time). The Translation Prize recognises outstanding translations between Indian languages. Bal Sahitya Puraskar (children's literature) and Yuva Puraskar (young writers under 35) are newer awards. The Anuvad Puraskar recognises translation from English/other languages into Indian languages. Knowledge of recent award winners, their works, and their literary contributions is regularly tested.

Candidates should know major periods of Indian literary history: Vedic and Sanskrit literary traditions, Bhakti movement poets (Kabir, Mirabai, Tulsidas, Surdas, Namdeo, Tukaram), classical Tamil Sangam literature, medieval Persian and Urdu literature, colonial-era reform literature (Bankimchandra, Premchand, Rabindranath Tagore), and modern post-independence Indian writing in English and regional languages. Understanding of major literary forms (epic, lyric, drama, novel, short story), major literary awards, and the institutional history of Indian cultural bodies including Sahitya Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Lalit Kala Akademi is important.

Sahitya Akademi offers Programme Officer, Assistant, Publication Assistant, and administrative roles with career growth to Senior Programme Officer, Director, and Senior Director levels. Officers gain deep exposure to India's literary heritage and contemporary writing in multiple languages, which is intellectually rewarding. Sahitya Akademi staff work with leading Indian writers, translators, and literary scholars.
