A Havildar SAA works in the Corps of Engineers (Survey) and is responsible for topographical surveys, cartographic work, and preparation of military maps. They use advanced survey instruments and computer-aided design software to produce accurate terrain maps used for military planning and operations. SAA soldiers receive specialised training at the Survey Training Institute after enrolment and play a crucial role in military engineering and intelligence functions.

Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects from a recognised board, or hold an ITI certificate in Civil Draughtsman trade. The minimum aggregate marks required in the qualifying examination is typically 50%. Candidates must be aged between 17.5 and 23 years at the time of application. Both 10+2 and ITI routes are accepted, making this accessible to technically skilled candidates from vocational backgrounds.

The physical standards for Army Havildar SAA include a minimum height of 167.5 cm for general category candidates (relaxation for hill states and tribal areas), chest measurement of 77–82 cm with a minimum 5 cm expansion, and minimum weight of 50 kg. Eyesight must be 6/6 correctable to 6/6 with glasses; however, individuals with laser eye surgery are eligible. Candidates must also clear a physical fitness test including a 1.6 km run and beam/pull-ups.

The written examination consists of 100 objective-type questions to be completed in 90 minutes, covering Mathematics, Physics, English, and General Science. Questions are primarily at the Class 10–12 level. Candidates who clear the written test proceed to the physical fitness test and medical examination. Final merit is based on the aggregate performance across written, physical, and medical stages.

Havildar SAA is a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) rank in the Indian Army. After enrolment as a Naik (equivalent), soldiers can be promoted to Havildar, Naib Subedar, Subedar, and Subedar Major over the course of their service. Outstanding Havildars can be granted a Hony Lieutenant or Hony Captain on retirement. They are entitled to full pension, medical facilities, CSD canteen access, and ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) benefits after retirement.
