The BSF Water Wing operates motor boats, patrol vessels, and launches for riverine border patrol along major rivers including the Brahmaputra in Assam/Arunachal Pradesh, the Ganga river border areas in Bihar, river-based borders with Bangladesh in West Bengal, and coastal areas. Boatmen (Nakhwa in local terminology) operate and maintain boats for patrol missions, transport of personnel and supplies to riverine border outposts, anti-smuggling operations on water routes, and search and rescue during floods. The BSF Water Wing has deployed during multiple Brahmaputra flood disasters, rescuing thousands of civilians along with border patrol duties.

BSF Water Wing exam tests specific knowledge including: River navigation terms (upstream, downstream, cross-current, eddies, rapids), Types of boats and their appropriate use (motorized vs. manual, types of vessels for different water conditions), Basic meteorology for water safety (reading weather for safe navigation), River geography of India (major rivers, tributaries, flood patterns of Brahmaputra, Ganga, and coastal waterways), Tide tables and tidal patterns for coastal deployment, Signal flags and marine navigation signals, and Basic boat maintenance and engine troubleshooting.

Swimming ability is mandatory for BSF Water Wing Boatman/Nakhwa recruitment. The swimming test typically requires candidates to swim 200-400 metres in open water within a specified time, demonstrate proficiency in different swimming strokes (freestyle, breaststroke), perform a water rescue demonstration, and show underwater swimming capability (diving to retrieve an object). Candidates who cannot swim are automatically disqualified regardless of written exam scores. The swimming test reflects the operational reality — BSF Water Wing personnel operate in fast-flowing rivers like the Brahmaputra which is among the world's most challenging rivers for navigation.

Standard BSF physical requirements apply: Male candidates need 165 cm height (170 cm for certain hilly/northeastern states) with 80 cm unexpanded chest and 85 cm expanded. Female candidates need 157 cm. The PET includes standard running tests, but with the addition of a mandatory swimming assessment. Water Wing personnel must maintain excellent cardiovascular fitness for continuous boat operation in rough river conditions. Visual acuity standards are important — 6/6 vision is preferred for navigation duties. Colour blindness is disqualifying for navigation signal reading.

BSF Water Wing plays a crucial role in securing India's water-based borders. The India-Bangladesh border includes 54 rivers where conventional land-based fencing is impossible, making boat patrols the only effective means of border management. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries form natural boundaries in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, requiring riverine surveillance to prevent infiltration and smuggling. Coastal areas near the Sundarbans and Gulf of Kutch face maritime cross-border challenges. BSF Water Wing units coordinate with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy for integrated maritime security. The Water Wing also provides critical flood rescue capability, positioning it as both a security and humanitarian asset.
