CISF ASI Stenographer is a ministerial post at the Assistant Sub Inspector level (Level 5, Rs. 29,200 per month) responsible for stenographic, secretarial, and administrative functions in CISF headquarters and field units. ASI Stenographers record dictations in shorthand, transcribe them, handle official correspondence, prepare reports, and assist commanding officers with secretarial work. They work in a professional office environment within CISF units deployed at airports, nuclear installations, and other critical infrastructure locations across India.

Candidates must have a shorthand speed of 80 words per minute in English or Hindi. The skill test typically involves a dictation passage of 10 minutes at 80 wpm, which must be transcribed within 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi). The typing speed for transcription should be at least 40 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. The skill test is qualifying in nature — candidates who pass the written exam must clear the stenography test before final selection. Practice with real dictation recordings is essential.

The written exam consists of 100 questions in 60 minutes covering: English Language & Comprehension (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, error spotting — 40 questions), General Studies (current affairs, history, geography, polity, science — 30 questions), and Reasoning Ability (logical reasoning, coding-decoding, series — 30 questions). The exam is English-focused as the role primarily involves English shorthand and correspondence. Strong command of English grammar and vocabulary is crucial for scoring well.

CISF ASI Stenographer (Level 5) can be promoted to SI Stenographer (Level 6), Inspector Stenographer (Level 7), and further to senior secretarial positions through departmental promotion. The stenographic cadre in CAPFs provides a distinct career path separate from the executive (operational) cadre. ASI Stenos posted at CISF Headquarters in New Delhi or Regional Offices get exposure to high-level administrative functions. With experience and performance, stenos may be assigned to the offices of senior CISF officers including Director General.

Preparation should be divided between written exam and stenography skill. For the written exam, focus on English grammar rules, vocabulary building, and comprehension practice daily. Study General Awareness topics from Class 10-12 NCERT books and current affairs for the past 6 months. For stenography, practice Pitman's Shorthand daily targeting 80 wpm — use online dictation tools and CISF/SSC previous year steno dictation passages. Aim for 90+ wpm in practice to have a comfortable margin on exam day. Typing practice should target 45 wpm English or 35 wpm Hindi.
