Frequently Asked Questions

Is GATE score valid for PSU recruitment?

Yes, GATE score is used by over 50 PSUs including BHEL, GAIL, NTPC, HPCL, IOCL, ONGC, PowerGrid and NLC for engineer trainee and management trainee recruitment. Each PSU sets its own GATE score cutoff and typically conducts a further GD/interview round.

How long is the GATE 2027 score valid?

The GATE 2027 scorecard is valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement. It can be used for MTech/ME/PhD admissions and PSU recruitment through 2030.

What is the GATE 2027 exam pattern?

GATE 2027 is a 3-hour computer-based test with 65 questions worth 100 marks: 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks of Engineering Mathematics plus the core subject (papers like XE, XL, XH, AR, DA, ES, EY and GG have paper-specific structures instead). Question types are MCQ (negative marking), MSQ and NAT (no negative marking).

Can I appear for two GATE papers in 2027?

Yes. GATE allows a candidate to apply for one or two papers from an approved combination list (for example, CS+DA, ME+PI, EC+IN). The two papers may be scheduled in different sessions, and you receive a separate scorecard for each.

What is a good GATE score for IIT MTech admission?

For the older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur) a GATE score of 700+ out of 1000 is typically needed for popular specialisations; NITs generally require 500-650. Cutoffs vary widely by department and category, and CCMT counselling publishes them after each round.

What is the GATE 2027 application fee?

Per the official GATE 2027 brochure: ₹2,000 for one paper during the regular window (₹1,000 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates), and ₹2,500/₹1,500 during the extended window with late fee. If you opt for two papers, the fee doubles. Note the 2027 registration window was revised — the current official window runs 2 September to 5 October 2026, with late fee until 12 October 2026.

Who can appear for GATE 2027?

Any candidate who has completed or is in the final year of a bachelor's degree in engineering/technology/architecture, or a master's degree in a relevant science (including MSc, MA, MCA, MBA), is eligible. There is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts.

Is Engineering Mathematics included in every GATE paper?

Most papers include about 13 marks of Engineering Mathematics. Exceptions exist: XE and XL test a dedicated Mathematics/Chemistry section, and papers like AR, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL have paper-specific structures. Check your paper's syllabus page on HenceProve for the exact breakdown.

How is the GATE score out of 1000 calculated?

Per the official brochure, GATE Score = 350 + (900 − 350) × (M − Mq) / (M̄t − Mq), where M is your (normalised) marks, Mq is the qualifying mark for your paper, and M̄t is the mean marks of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates (whichever is larger). The anchors are 350 at the qualifying mark and 900 at the topper level, so scores are comparable across papers and years.

What extra time do PwD candidates get in GATE 2027?

As per the August 2025 Ministry of Social Justice guidelines, PwD candidates with eligible disability get 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour — one full extra hour across the 3-hour GATE exam — plus a scribe where permitted.

Can I use GATE for MSc/PhD admission?

Yes. Beyond MTech, GATE scores are accepted for PhD programmes at IITs/IISc, for CSIR/DBT-linked research routes in some departments, for the three-year MTech after MSc, and for admission to NUS/Singapore and some German universities that recognise GATE.
