About GATE Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (GATE DA) 2027
The GATE Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (GATE DA) is one of the most competitive entrance exams, conducted by the IIT Madras (organising institute for GATE 2027). Preparing for the GATE DA requires systematic practice, conceptual clarity, and regular self-evaluation. Our platform offers dynamic mock tests, previous years' resolved papers, and AI-enabled analysis to help you secure a top rank.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is GATE DA and who should take it?
GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) is a GATE paper introduced in 2024 for data science, AI and ML roles. It suits BTech/BE graduates of any branch, MCA/MSc students, and working professionals targeting MTech in AI/DS at IITs, IIIT-H, IISc, or data-science positions in PSUs.
What is the GATE DA exam pattern?
GATE DA has 65 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours: 15 marks General Aptitude plus 85 marks of subject sections — Probability & Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Calculus & Optimisation, Programming/DSA, DBMS & Warehousing, Machine Learning and AI. There is no separate Engineering Mathematics section — the maths is embedded in subject sections.
Is GATE DA easier than GATE CS?
DA has a smaller syllabus than CS (no OS, networks, TOC or compiler design) but tests ML and statistics deeply. The 2026 DA qualifying cutoff was 26.4 for General versus 30 for CS — marginally lower, partly because the paper is newer and the applicant pool is smaller.
Which institutes accept GATE DA?
IIT Madras (the paper's originator), IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IISc and several IIITs accept GATE DA for MTech/MSc in Data Science, AI and ML. Many PSU and central government data-science roles now also list GATE DA.
Do I need to know coding for GATE DA?
Yes — the Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms section tests reading code (Python/C style pseudocode), complexity analysis and data structures. However, questions test logic more than syntax, so strong DSA fundamentals matter more than language mastery.
What is a good GATE DA score for IIT admission?
For IIT Madras/Hyderabad MTech in Data Science, aim for a GATE score above 700 and a rank within the top 200-300. NITs and newer IITs admit at scores around 500-600. Cutoffs vary by round in COAP counselling.
How to Prepare for GATE DA
Probability and Statistics carry the single highest weightage — master distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing first
Practise ML theory with derivations: linear regression closed forms, SVM margins, backpropagation chain rule
Solve 20 DSA questions weekly — GATE DA tests analysis of code output and complexity, not writing full programs
Linear Algebra (SVD, eigen-decomposition, projections) is the mathematical backbone of ML — do not skip it
Solve all previous GATE DA papers (2024-2026) — as a new paper, its question style is still stabilising and repeats patterns
