AIIMS Nursing Officer Grade-2 positions are among the most prestigious nursing jobs in India due to AIIMS's status as premier national medical institutions. The pay is significantly better than state government posts—AIIMS nurses are placed in Central Pay Scale Level 7 (₹44,900–₹1,42,400) plus central government HRA, DA, and other allowances making total CTC approximately ₹6–8 lakhs per year. Additionally, AIIMS offers better pay, PF, gratuity compared to state govt posts, along with excellent professional development opportunities, exposure to complex clinical cases, and a learning environment that cannot be matched in most state hospitals.

AIIMS Nursing Officer exam is rated hard due to its comprehensive and in-depth coverage of nursing science. The Nursing Science section tests advanced knowledge across medical-surgical nursing, critical care nursing, pediatric nursing, obstetric nursing, community health nursing, psychiatric nursing, and nursing administration. General Awareness covers current health policies, national and international events, and healthcare management. Reasoning & Aptitude includes logical reasoning, data interpretation, and numerical ability. The negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer demands high accuracy.

There are currently 25 AIIMS across India (including AIIMS New Delhi, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Rishikesh, and others). Recruitment may be conducted independently by each AIIMS or jointly for multiple AIIMS simultaneously. AIIMS New Delhi often conducts its own recruitment while newer AIIMS sometimes join for common exams. AIIMS Nursing Officers can progress through a defined career ladder: Nursing Officer Grade-2 → Nursing Officer Grade-1 → Senior Nursing Officer → Nursing Sister → Nursing Superintendent → Deputy Nursing Superintendent → Chief Nursing Officer. Promotions are based on seniority-cum-merit with departmental examinations for senior positions. AIIMS also encourages and supports higher education, and nurses with M.Sc. or Ph.D. in nursing may be considered for faculty or research positions within the institution, offering a diverse career trajectory.

For AIIMS Nursing Officer exam, candidates must go beyond diploma-level knowledge and study advanced clinical topics: ICU and critical care nursing (ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac arrhythmias), advanced pharmacology (drug interactions, critical medications, IV calculations), infection control and hospital-acquired infection prevention (NABH standards), evidence-based nursing practice, nursing research methodology, healthcare management and quality improvement, advanced medical-surgical nursing for complex conditions, and pediatric critical care. The depth of knowledge required significantly exceeds state-level nursing exams.
