EPFO Social Security Officers are placed in a pay scale with gross monthly earnings in the range of Rs. 40,000–55,000 including basic pay, DA, HRA, and allowances as per 7th Pay Commission norms. SSOs also benefit from EPFO's own pension scheme (EPS-95 where EPFO manages the corpus exceeding Rs. 18 lakh crore), medical reimbursement, LTC, and gratuity. Career progression leads to Assistant PF Commissioner, PF Commissioner, and Regional PF Commissioner.

Both are field-level enforcement and administration posts within EPFO, but SSO (Social Security Officer) typically focuses more on compliance facilitation, member education, and employer relationship management, while EO (Enforcement Officer) has more punitive enforcement powers including conducting surprise inspections and initiating prosecution proceedings. SSO posts are generally recruited through EPFO's own direct recruitment process, while EO posts have historically been routed through UPSC. Both require strong knowledge of the EPF Act and labour laws.

Critical labour laws include the EPF and MP Act 1952 (contribution rates, coverage, scheme provisions), EPS-95 (pension scheme structure and calculation), EDLIS 1976, Social Security Code 2020 (consolidating four labour codes), Payment of Gratuity Act, Payment of Bonus Act, Minimum Wages Act, and Industrial Disputes Act. Candidates should know amendment provisions of the Social Security Code 2020 which subsumes the EPF Act and ESI Act into a unified framework.

EPFO invests its over Rs. 18 lakh crore corpus in central and state government securities (the largest proportion), exchange-traded funds (ETFs) invested in NIFTY50 and SENSEX, and public sector bonds. EPFO was the first social security organization in India to invest in equity through ETFs. The Finance, Investment and Audit Committee of the Central Board of Trustees governs investment decisions. This corpus makes EPFO one of the world's largest defined benefit pension managers.

The Finance and Accounts section tests basic accounting concepts (journal entries, balance sheet, P&L), financial ratios, PF contribution calculation, interest computation, taxation basics, and EPFO trust fund management. Candidates with a commerce background have a natural edge; others should study Class 12 Accountancy and basic Financial Management.
