The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh is one of India's oldest and most prestigious physical education institutions, established in 1957. Operating under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as a Deemed University, LNIPE offers the full range of physical education programmes from BPEd and MPEd through to PhD. It is named after Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, symbolising the spirit of physical courage and excellence. LNIPE graduates hold key positions across India's sports establishment including SAI, state sports departments, and university PE departments.

The LNIPE MPEd entrance has 100 objective-type questions in 90 minutes at postgraduate-level difficulty. The three sections are Physical Education (advanced theory including philosophy of sport, sports administration, curriculum design, coaching methodology, physical fitness assessment), Sports Science (exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sports psychology, sports nutrition, sports medicine), and Research Methodology (types of research, research design, sampling, statistical tests including t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, correlation and regression, and research report writing). Negative marking of 0.25 applies.

The physical proficiency test at LNIPE tests candidates on standard athletic events: 100m sprint, 1500m run (men)/800m (women), standing broad jump, shot put, and a sports-specific skill demonstration. LNIPE maintains specific minimum standards for each event and candidates failing to meet minimum standards in any event may be disqualified regardless of written test performance. The physical test carries approximately 30% of total merit. LNIPE's standards are considered among the most rigorous of all physical education institutions in India.

LNIPE has a well-equipped sports science laboratory complex including biomechanics lab (with force plates, gait analysis systems, high-speed cameras), exercise physiology lab (metabolic carts, cycle ergometers, lactate analysers), sports psychology lab, body composition assessment room, and performance analysis suite. The institution has an extensive physical education library with domestic and international journals. Research students have access to national database subscriptions. PhD scholars benefit from mentorship by experienced faculty who have contributed to national sports science research.

LNIPE actively supports career placement through a dedicated Training and Placement Cell that maintains relationships with SAI, state sports departments, school chains, fitness industry players, and sports NGOs. Campus recruitment and job notification services are provided to students and alumni. Many LNIPE MPEd graduates have secured positions as Physical Education Directors at central universities, Sports Scientists at SAI NCOEs, Senior Physical Education Teachers at Kendriya Vidyalayas, and coaches at national sports academies.
