Agnipath Scheme – Indian Air Force Agniveer Y (Non-Technical) Group

The Indian Air Force Agniveer Y (Non-Technical) Group covers trades such as Logistics, Accounts, Administration, Security, Poet/Musician, Ground Training Instructor, Drawing Master, Indian Air Force Police (IAF-P), and Fire and Safety. These are non-technical support functions that keep IAF stations and establishments running efficiently. Y Group Agniveers do not work on aircraft systems but play equally important roles in IAF's administrative and security framework.

X Group (Technical) is for candidates with Physics and Mathematics background who will work on aircraft and technical systems; it requires higher education qualifications and the written test is harder (Physics + Maths heavy). Y Group (Non-Technical) is open to any stream candidates who have passed Class 12 with English, and the written test focuses on English, General Awareness, and Reasoning. X Group generally offers higher stipend increments due to technical nature of work. Candidates with PCM background can appear for both X and Y simultaneously.

The Y Group written test consists of 50 questions to be answered in 45 minutes. The sections are English (20 questions) covering grammar, comprehension, vocabulary and usage; Reasoning & Military Aptitude (15 questions) covering spatial, numerical, and verbal reasoning; and General Awareness (15 questions) covering current events, Indian Air Force history, Indian geography, and science. Negative marking of 0.25 applies. The examination is conducted online at designated test centres.

Yes, candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for X Group (PCM background with 50% aggregate) can appear for both X and Y groups simultaneously in a single examination session. The combined paper includes the Y Group syllabus plus Physics and Mathematics sections. Candidates receive separate scores for X and Y group eligibility. This is beneficial for PCM students who can attempt both and accept whichever offer comes first.

After 4 years, 25% of Y Group Agniveers are retained in the regular IAF on the basis of merit evaluated during service. Those not retained receive the Seva Nidhi corpus (approximately Rs 11.71 lakh tax-free) along with a skill certificate from IAF. Various state governments have announced reservations in state police and home guard forces for ex-Agniveers. The IAF also provides a placement cell that assists released Agniveers in finding civilian employment, particularly in aviation-related industries.
