A Religious Teacher JCO serves as a spiritual guide and moral counsellor for soldiers of their respective faith. They conduct daily and festival prayers, religious ceremonies, and moral education classes. During peacetime and active operations, they provide spiritual support to troops and maintain religious harmony in units. The Army has RTs for four major religions: Hinduism (Pandit), Islam (Maulvi), Sikhism (Granthi), and Christianity (Padre).

Candidates must be aged between 27 and 34 years. For the Hindu RT (Pandit) post, candidates must have a Shastri degree with Sanskrit or a graduate degree with Religious Studies. For Muslim RT (Maulvi), an Alim/Fazil degree from a recognised madrasa or a graduation with Islamic Studies is required. Sikh RT (Granthi) requires Giani degree or equivalent. Christian RT (Padre) requires theology degree or Bachelor of Divinity. All candidates must meet Army physical standards including minimum height requirements.

The 50-question written examination covers three broad areas: Religious Knowledge specific to the candidate's faith (which forms the majority of questions), General Studies including Indian history, current affairs, and civics, and English language skills including grammar and comprehension. The religious knowledge section tests depth of scriptural understanding, ritual practices, and religious history. Candidates must achieve minimum qualifying marks in each section.

JCO Religious Teachers are commissioned as Naib Subedars (equivalent) on appointment, with pay in Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix. They receive all benefits applicable to JCOs including military service pay, field area allowances, ration, accommodation, and medical facilities for self and family. After qualifying service, they are entitled to a pension under the Armed Forces pension scheme, making it a highly secure and respected position.

Candidates should thoroughly study their respective religious scriptures: Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Ramayana for Pandit candidates; Quran, Hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence for Maulvi candidates; Guru Granth Sahib and Sikh history for Granthi candidates; and the Bible and Christian theology for Padre candidates. Understanding the history and philosophy of the respective religion, key religious personalities, festivals, and rituals is equally important. Practical knowledge of conducting religious ceremonies will be tested at the interview stage.
