Sundarbans National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest mangrove forest, is the most important area to study. It is also a major tiger reserve. Buxa Tiger Reserve in the Dooars region, Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling hills, Gorumara National Park (Indian one-horned rhino), Neora Valley National Park, and Jaldapara National Park (one-horned rhino) are key protected areas. The state animal is the Fishing Cat, state bird is the White-throated Kingfisher.

West Bengal Forest Guards patrol diverse ecosystems ranging from Sundarbans mangroves and Terai-Dooars forests to Himalayan foothill forests. They enforce the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Forest Conservation Act 1980, preventing poaching of tigers, rhinos, and other Schedule I species. Guards in Sundarbans face unique challenges including tiger encounters during patrols. Duties include anti-poaching surveillance, fire prevention, checking timber transit documents, and community awareness in forest fringe villages.

Male candidates require a minimum height of 163 cm and chest measurement of 79 cm unexpanded, expandable to 84 cm. Female candidates require a minimum height of 150 cm. A physical efficiency test is conducted in addition to the written exam. The test includes running and other fitness assessments. Given the diverse and challenging terrain in West Bengal (mangroves, hills, Terai), physical fitness is critically important for this role.

West Bengal Forest Guards receive a monthly salary of Rs. 18,000-25,000 under WB government pay scales with applicable dearness allowance, HRA, and other allowances. Special allowances may apply for hazardous postings like Sundarbans where the tiger risk is higher. The position offers job security, government benefits, medical facilities, and pension under NPS.
