Bureau of Police Research and Development Constable (Technical) ITI Exam

BPRD (Bureau of Police Research and Development) provides guidelines for police recruitment across India, including for technical constable posts that require ITI qualification. Technical Constables in police forces work in communication, transport maintenance, forensic labs, armory, and other technical wings. State police forces like UP Police, Bihar Police, Rajasthan Police, and MP Police recruit Technical Constables for roles including Vehicle Mechanic, Wireless Operator, Electrician, and Computer Operator. These posts offer the benefits of police service (uniform, allowances, prestige) combined with technical specialization. The job requires ITI qualification in a relevant trade.

Constable Technical exam requires ITI qualification in a specific trade while Constable GD (General Duty) only requires Class 10 pass. The Technical Constable exam has a Trade Knowledge section testing trade-specific skills, in addition to General Studies, Mathematics, and language sections. The physical fitness requirements may be slightly different — Technical Constables may have slightly relaxed running standards compared to GD Constables in some states. Pay scales are identical at entry level (Constable grade) but Technical Constables may get special technical allowances. The selection process for Technical Constables may include a trade test or practical assessment in addition to the written exam.

Police Technical Constable posts are available for a variety of ITI trades depending on the specific technical wing. Electrician trade holders are recruited for electrical maintenance of police stations and buildings. Automobile Mechanic/Diesel Mechanic holders work in police transport workshops. Electronics Mechanic and IT-related trade holders work in communications and cyber cells. Radio Mechanic holders are recruited for wireless communication units. Photographer trade holders assist in forensic work. Computer Operator and Programming Assistant trade holders work in police data centers. Technical Constables are appointed at Pay Level 3 (Rs. 21,700–69,100) in most states, similar to regular Constables, with additional technical allowances in some states. With DA, HRA, and other allowances, the monthly take-home can be Rs. 35,000–45,000 at the time of joining. Career progression is through departmental promotion exams — Constable to Head Constable, then ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector), SI (Sub-Inspector), and further. Technical Constables with engineering degrees or higher qualifications may get faster promotion. State Police Welfare Funds provide various benefits including housing loans, medical aid, and children's scholarships.

Physical fitness standards for Technical Constables vary by state but generally include a running test, height and chest measurement, and medical examination. For male candidates, a typical requirement is 1.6 km run in 6.5 minutes, minimum height of 165–168 cm (lower for reserved/hill categories), and chest measurement of 77–82 cm (expanded). Female candidates have relaxed standards — 800m run in 4–5 minutes and height of 152–157 cm. Weight is checked proportional to height. Medical examination tests eyesight, hearing, and general physical fitness. Technical Constables may have slightly more relaxed physical standards than GD Constables in some states, but maintain generally similar criteria.
