BSF Head Constable Radio Operator (RO) and Radio Mechanic (RM) are technical posts responsible for operating and maintaining communication equipment at border outposts. RMs are responsible for servicing, repairing, and maintaining all radio and electronic communication equipment. Male candidates need 165 cm height and 77-82 cm chest. Female candidates need 157 cm height. The written exam tests Class 12 Physics and Mathematics along with electronics fundamentals.

Key Physics topics include Electromagnetism, Current Electricity, Semiconductor Devices, Wave Theory and Propagation, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, and Modern Physics. Electronics topics cover Transistors, Amplifiers, Oscillators, Modulation and Demodulation (AM/FM), Antennas and Transmission Lines, Digital Electronics (Logic Gates, Boolean Algebra), and Microprocessors basics. Mathematics covers Trigonometry, Algebra, Calculus basics, Statistics, and Coordinate Geometry at Class 12 level. Candidates with a 3-year Diploma in Electronics/Communication have an advantage.

Male candidates must be 165 cm tall with a chest of 77 cm (unexpanded) and at least 82 cm when expanded (5 cm minimum expansion). Female candidates need a minimum height of 157 cm. The Physical Efficiency Test includes a 5 km run in 24 minutes for males and 1.6 km in 8.30 minutes for females. Long jump and 100-metre sprint tests are also conducted. While technical posts may have slightly different PET requirements compared to GD posts, all BSF recruits must demonstrate adequate physical fitness for field deployment.

BSF Head Constable RO/RM (Level 5, Rs. 29,200) is comparable to similar technical posts in CRPF, CISF, and ITBP. The key difference is the operational environment — BSF RO/RMs work in border communication networks facing extreme weather and hostile terrain, from the Thar Desert to the Sundarbans. ITBP's Telecom Head Constable works in Himalayan high-altitude conditions. CISF technical posts are primarily deployed at industrial/airport security. BSF offers unique experience in border management communication infrastructure, including satellite-based surveillance systems.
