The Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) is a gazetted government officer responsible for overall administration and management of ICDS — the world's largest integrated child development programme with 14 lakh anganwadi workers — within a specific project area (typically a block or urban ward cluster). CDPOs supervise ICDS Supervisors and through them, all Anganwadi Centres in the project area. Candidates should be able to apply these theories to understand child behaviour, design appropriate activities, and identify developmental concerns in ICDS beneficiary children.

Critical nutrition topics include protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) classification (Gomez, Waterlow, SAM/MAM), micronutrient deficiency disorders (anaemia, Vitamin A deficiency, iodine deficiency disorders), complementary feeding practices, exclusive breastfeeding, POSHAN Abhiyaan's six key interventions, community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food), growth monitoring procedures using WHO growth charts, and National Family Health Survey (NFHS) nutrition indicators. ICDS's supplementary nutrition programme menus, caloric requirements for different beneficiary categories, and food fortification policies are also frequently tested.

The interview for CDPO is typically conducted by a State Public Service Commission board or a departmental selection committee. Candidates are assessed on their knowledge of child development theories and their practical applications, understanding of ICDS programme management challenges, awareness of current government nutrition and welfare schemes, situational judgment (how they would handle field-level challenges), and communication skills in Hindi or the regional language. Familiarity with Poshan Tracker, digital monitoring tools, and data-driven programme management is increasingly valued in CDPO interviews.
