Candidates must have passed Class 10 from a recognised board and must be a bonafide resident of Himachal Pradesh. Male candidates need a minimum height of 163 cm and chest measurement of 79-84 cm; female candidates need a minimum height of 150 cm. The age limit is generally 18-36 years with relaxations for SC/ST/OBC categories as per HP government norms. Local language knowledge is beneficial but not mandatory.

HP Forest Guards patrol mountainous forest areas in the Himalayas to prevent poaching, illegal wood cutting, and forest encroachment. They enforce the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Forest Conservation Act 1980 in protected areas like Great Himalayan National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Pin Valley National Park, and Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary. Guards also perform fire line maintenance, assist in wildlife census, and protect high-altitude forests from grazing and other human pressures.

Great Himalayan National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and very important for the exam. Other key protected areas include Kufri Wildlife Sanctuary, Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary, Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary, Gobind Sagar Bird Sanctuary, and Pin Valley National Park. The HP state animal is the Snow Leopard, state bird is the Western Tragopan (Jujurana), and state tree is Deodar. Himalayan ecosystems including alpine meadows (bugyal), coniferous forests, and oak forests are key topics.

HP Forest Guards are placed in the pay band with a monthly salary of Rs. 18,000-25,000 along with Himachal Pradesh government allowances. Given the difficult terrain and hill allowances applicable in hilly districts, the effective monthly compensation can be higher. The position provides job security, government accommodation facilities in remote postings, medical benefits, leave entitlements, and NPS pension.

Focus heavily on Himachal Pradesh-specific general knowledge including state geography, rivers (Beas, Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi), hill districts, forests, and wildlife. Forest science topics like silviculture, forest types (tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, alpine), ecology, and biodiversity are important. Practise Hindi grammar and mathematics regularly. Taking HP-specific mock tests helps identify weak areas and builds examination temperament.
