The 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry is a prestigious scheme that selects outstanding Class 12 (PCM) students for commissioning as Executive Branch officers in the Indian Navy. Selected cadets undergo a 4-year B.Tech degree programme at prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram or at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. After completing the degree, cadets are commissioned as Sub-Lieutenants in the Indian Navy.

Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, scoring a minimum aggregate of 70% in PCM. The age limit is 17 to 19.5 years at the time of commencement of the course. Both male and female candidates are eligible. Physical standards include minimum height of 157 cm for males (152 cm for females), proportionate weight, and distant vision 6/6 correctable to 6/6. Laser eye surgery is permitted with a waiting period.

The selection process starts with a written examination covering Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English at the Class 12 level. Shortlisted candidates are called for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview at Bhopal, Bangalore, or Visakhapatnam. The SSB is a 5-day process assessing intelligence, psychological suitability, and personality through various tests. Candidates recommended by SSB undergo medical examination. Final selection is based on merit combining written test and SSB scores.

After completing the 4-year B.Tech and training at the Indian Naval Academy, cadets are commissioned as Sub-Lieutenants in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy. They can specialise in operations, navigation, communication, aviation, submarines, or weapons as their career progresses. Commissioned officers are entitled to full officer-level pay, allowances, pension, prestigious social status, and an adventurous career at sea and in naval aviation. Promotions follow a structured career path up to the rank of Admiral.

The scheme is extremely competitive, with only 30–35 vacancies available each year against lakhs of applicants. The written test is set at a high standard comparable to engineering entrance examinations, testing advanced Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. PCM percentage above 80% significantly improves selection chances. The SSB further filters candidates on psychological and personality parameters. Students who have cleared JEE Mains or Advanced are at an advantage for this entry.
