Indian Navy Tradesman Mate (Group C Civilian) Recruitment

Tradesman Mates are Group C civilian employees working in Naval Dockyards, Naval Armament Depots, and various Naval establishments. They assist Skilled Tradesmen in carrying out maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on naval ships, aircraft, and equipment. Depending on their ITI trade, they may work in areas such as electrical maintenance, mechanical fitting, welding, carpentry, painting, and plumbing. It is an entry-level civilian defence post with growth potential through departmental promotions.

Candidates must have passed Class 10 from a recognised board and hold an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in a relevant trade such as Electrician, Fitter, Welder, Carpenter, Plumber, or Painter. Age limit is generally 18–25 years with relaxations for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), and ex-servicemen as per government norms. Candidates must be Indian nationals and meet the basic physical fitness standards prescribed for Group C posts.

The written test consists of 100 objective-type questions to be answered in 60 minutes. The paper is divided into General Studies (covering basic GK, current affairs, English, and reasoning), Mathematics (Class 10 level arithmetic and algebra), and Technical Knowledge specific to the candidate's ITI trade. Candidates are evaluated on their foundational understanding of their trade and general aptitude. No negative marking means candidates should attempt all questions.

Yes, candidates shortlisted on the basis of the written examination are called for a practical skill test in their respective trade. This test evaluates hands-on competency — for example, an Electrician candidate may be asked to wire a circuit board, while a Fitter candidate may be tested on basic machining or assembly work. The skill test is qualifying in nature and candidates must demonstrate proficiency to be considered for final selection.

Tradesman Mates are Group C central government employees entitled to 7th Pay Commission pay in Level 1 of the pay matrix (approximately Rs 18,000–19,900 basic pay), plus allowances like HRA, transport allowance, and medical benefits under CGHS. Job security, provident fund, gratuity, and pension under the NPS scheme are standard benefits. Promotion to Skilled Tradesman, Highly Skilled Tradesman, and further grades is possible through departmental examinations.
