The NTA NET (National Eligibility Test) Physical Education is conducted by the National Testing Agency to determine eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor and for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Physical Education at Indian colleges and universities. It is mandatory for anyone wishing to teach Physical Education at the degree college level in central or most state universities. The JRF qualification additionally allows candidates to receive a research fellowship to pursue PhD in Physical Education or Sports Science under UGC-funded schemes.

Paper 1 (50 questions, 100 marks) is common to all subjects and tests Teaching & Research Aptitude, Reasoning, Comprehension, Communication, Mathematical Aptitude, and Information Technology. Paper 2 (100 questions, 200 marks) is subject-specific and covers the entire Physical Education and Sports Science syllabus including Exercise Physiology, Sports Biomechanics, Sports Psychology, Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Physical Education Pedagogy, Sports Administration, Research Methodology, and the History and Philosophy of Sport. Both papers are taken in the same session totalling 3 hours.

The Paper 2 syllabus is divided into units: Unit 1 – Philosophy and History of Physical Education; Unit 2 – Sports Psychology (motivation, arousal, aggression, team dynamics); Unit 3 – Exercise Physiology (energy systems, cardiovascular adaptations, strength training physiology); Unit 4 – Kinesiology and Biomechanics (levers, planes of motion, biomechanical principles); Unit 5 – Sports Medicine and Athletic Training (injury management, taping, rehabilitation); Unit 6 – Test, Measurement, and Evaluation in PE; Unit 7 – Sports Management and Administration; Unit 8 – Research Methodology and Statistics in PE.

NET qualification (without JRF) makes candidates eligible to be appointed as Assistant Professor at colleges and universities. JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) additionally provides a monthly stipend (currently Rs. 37,000 for the first two years, increasing to Rs. 42,000 subsequently) to pursue full-time PhD research. JRF is awarded to top-ranked candidates in each subject category based on merit. The JRF validity is three years from the date of declaration of results. NET-qualified candidates without JRF must arrange their own funding if pursuing research.

NET Physical Education is required for Assistant Professor positions at colleges and universities offering BPEd, MPEd, or Sports Science programmes. Central universities (JNU, BHU, Jamia, Delhi University) and deemed universities strictly require NET for appointment. State universities and colleges follow UGC regulations which mandate NET for initial recruitment. LNIPE, SNIPES, and Sports National Institute of Physical Education Sciences also require NET for faculty positions. The qualification also opens doors to research officer positions at national sports research bodies.
