The Postal Assistant (PA) and Sorting Assistant (SA) exam is conducted by the Department of Posts (India Post) to recruit staff for post offices and mail sorting centres across India. Postal Assistants handle counter operations at post offices—processing mail, financial services (India Post Payments Bank, MIS, PLI), parcel tracking, and customer service. Sorting Assistants work at mail sorting hubs, categorising and routing parcels and letters. Both are central government roles with job security, regular increments, and promotional avenues to Inspector of Posts and beyond.

The CBT has 100 questions in 90 minutes with no negative marking. Sections include General Knowledge and Current Affairs (25 marks), Mathematics and Numerical Ability (25 marks), English Language (25 marks), and Computer Proficiency and Reasoning (25 marks). The difficulty is moderate—12th pass candidates with basic preparation can clear the exam. A typing test is conducted subsequently for candidates who qualify the CBT, testing speed and accuracy in English or Hindi typing.

Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board—no graduation is required. The age limit is 18 to 27 years, with relaxations for SC/ST (5 years) and OBC (3 years) candidates. Children of departmental India Post employees may get additional preference in some circles. Since India Post is present in every corner of India including remote villages, candidates willing to serve in their home circle have a high probability of getting a local posting.

Postal Assistants are placed in Pay Level 4 (approximately Rs. 25,500–81,100 per month) with additional allowances such as HRA, TA, and DA. Regular increments, annual bonuses, and access to India Post's provident fund and medical benefits are provided. Career progression leads to LSG (Lower Selection Grade), HSG (Higher Selection Grade), Inspector of Posts, and Assistant Superintendent of Posts through departmental exams and seniority. India Post also promotes meritorious PAs to IPoS (Indian Postal Service) through combined competitive examinations.

The exam is well-suited for candidates who have consistently studied through Class XII. For General Knowledge, read the newspaper daily and follow a monthly current affairs magazine. For Mathematics, practise percentage, profit/loss, simple interest, time and work, and number systems from Class X-XI textbooks. English preparation should cover grammar basics, comprehension, and vocabulary. Computer proficiency questions test basic MS Office, internet fundamentals, and postal software concepts. Attempt 8–10 mock tests in the final two months and get comfortable with typing speed (25 WPM minimum).
