PowerGrid Diploma Trainee selection involves a written test (CBT) and a Personal Interview. The written test covers technical subject questions (discipline-specific), followed by aptitude and English sections. Candidates clearing the written test cutoff are called for an interview at the nearest PowerGrid regional office. The interview assesses technical knowledge, professional attitude, and willingness to work at remote transmission line sites. Final selection is based on combined written and interview scores.

PowerGrid Diploma Trainees are placed in the W-1 Workmen grade with a starting pay of approximately Rs. 25,000–30,000 per month under the IDA pay scale. The total CTC including allowances — particularly the Field/Project Allowance for sub-station and transmission line postings — can reach Rs. 4–6 lakh per annum. After confirmation as Junior Engineers (Workmen), employees are eligible for biennial pay increments and promotional upgrades through departmental tests.

PowerGrid Diploma Trainees are required to execute a service bond for two years after joining. The bond amount is typically Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh and is recoverable if the candidate leaves during the bond period. Postings are pan-India at PowerGrid sub-stations, transmission line projects, and regional load despatch centres (RLDCs). Candidates posted to remote locations (e.g., North-East or hill areas) receive additional field allowances.

The PowerGrid Diploma Trainee Electrical exam covers Power Systems (transmission lines, transformers, sub-station equipment), Electrical Machines (motors, generators), Basic Electrical Engineering (circuits, AC/DC), Measuring Instruments, Protection and Switchgear, and Illumination Engineering. Questions are at diploma level and focus on sub-station and transmission line maintenance operations that are relevant to PowerGrid's core business. Standard diploma textbooks and previous PowerGrid question papers are the best study resources.

After confirmation as Junior Engineer (Workmen), PowerGrid Diploma Trainees can grow through the workmen promotion ladder to Senior Junior Engineer, Supervisor, Senior Supervisor, and further. With additional qualifications (B.Tech completion through part-time or lateral entry), diploma holders can transition to the executive cadre through GATE-based recruitment.
