RPET (Rajasthan Polytechnic Engineering Test) is the state entrance exam for 3-year diploma programs in engineering conducted by the Board of Technical Education Rajasthan. It is distinct from REAP (Rajasthan Engineering Admission Process) which is for B.Tech admissions. RPET scores are used for admission to government and private polytechnic colleges affiliated with BTER. The exam focuses on Class 10 level Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry without any Hindi language component. Over 200 polytechnic colleges in Rajasthan participate in the counseling process based on RPET scores.

RPET Mathematics covers Class 10 topics including Real Numbers, Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes, and Statistics. Approximately 35–40 questions are from Mathematics making it the highest weightage section. Number theory and algebra questions appear most frequently. Practice at least 200 Mathematics problems from NCERT and reference books. Geometry and mensuration problems require both conceptual understanding and calculation accuracy.

After completing a RPET-based diploma, graduates are eligible for Junior Engineer posts in Rajasthan government departments including RRVUNL, RSEB, PHED, PWD, and Rajasthan Housing Board. RSMSSB (Rajasthan Staff Selection Board) conducts JE recruitment exams open to diploma holders. PSU companies like NTPC, NHPC, and Coal India also recruit from Rajasthan polytechnic graduates. Apprenticeship opportunities under NAPS in Rajasthan-based industries provide hands-on work experience. RSRTC and Jaipur Metro also hire diploma holders for technical posts.

RPET itself is a Rajasthan-specific exam. However, the diploma obtained after completing a RPET-based polytechnic course is recognized nationally for lateral entry to B.Tech programs. Candidates with Rajasthan diploma can apply for lateral entry to B.Tech at RTU (Rajasthan Technical University) Kota through REAP lateral entry counseling. Other state technical universities and private universities across India also accept diplomas from AICTE-approved institutions. The diploma marks percentage is the key criterion for lateral entry admissions.

The RPET exam has 100 multiple-choice questions distributed across Mathematics (40 questions), Physics (30 questions), and Chemistry (30 questions). The duration is 2 hours and each question carries 1 mark with no negative marking. There is no minimum qualifying marks criterion for the merit list — candidates are ranked purely based on marks obtained. In case of equal marks, date of birth (older candidate gets higher rank) is used as tiebreaker. The merit list is prepared separately for General, OBC, SC, ST, and EWS categories as per Rajasthan reservation policy.
