Railway Recruitment Board Assistant Station Master Recruitment Exam

Assistant Station Master (ASM) is an entry-level traffic post, while Station Master is a higher-grade post. Both are recruited through RRB and require the same A1 medical standard and aptitude test. ASM is placed at Pay Level 6, whereas Station Master may be at the same or a higher level depending on the grade. ASMs assist in train operations, signal management, and passenger services under the supervision of a senior Station Master.

The Psycho Test (or Computer-Based Aptitude Test) is a mandatory stage for ASM recruitment that assesses cognitive abilities including memory, attention span, spatial reasoning, and information processing speed. It is conducted after CBT Stage 2. Candidates who do not qualify the psycho test cannot be selected for ASM, irrespective of their written exam scores. The test is standardised and there is no official study material, but practising concentration and memory exercises helps.

RRB ASM requires the A1 medical standard — the highest fitness category in Indian Railways. This mandates 6/6 vision (corrected) in both eyes, no colour blindness, no night blindness, good hearing, and absence of any disability that could affect train operations. The medical examination is conducted by Railway Medical Officers at the divisional level and includes detailed eye tests, blood pressure checks, and audiometry.

The final merit list for RRB ASM is prepared based on CBT Stage 2 scores only, provided the candidate has cleared CBT Stage 1 and the aptitude test. There is no interview for this post. Candidates are ranked zone-wise and community-wise (UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS), and selection is offered based on available vacancies in each railway zone. Document verification and medical examination are the last steps before final appointment.

There is no separate physical fitness or endurance test for RRB ASM beyond the standard medical examination. However, the A1 medical standard is quite comprehensive and ensures candidates are in good health. Candidates must not have any colour blindness, hearing impairment, or musculoskeletal conditions that could impair duty. The medical examination is conducted at the Divisional Railway Hospital and is final.
