Sashastra Seema Bal Constable General Duty Recruitment

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is India's border guarding force responsible for securing the 1,751 km Indo-Nepal border and the 699 km Indo-Bhutan border — a total of 2,450 km of open and friendly borders. SSB Constable GD patrols the border, conducts anti-smuggling and anti-human trafficking operations, manages border outposts (BOP), and maintains good relations with the local border populations. Unlike the Indo-Pakistan or Indo-China borders, Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders are traditionally open, creating unique security challenges related to illegal migration, smuggling of narcotics and fake currency.

SSB Constable GD recruitment is conducted through the SSC GD Constable exam — same as CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles. The process includes: Computer-Based Test (100 questions, 90 minutes), Physical Standard Test (height, chest, weight), Physical Efficiency Test (running tests), Medical Examination, and Document Verification. SSB has a smaller force strength compared to CRPF and BSF, with approximately 90,000 personnel. Vacancies through SSC GD are released based on retirements and expansion of border outposts.

The Indo-Nepal border runs through diverse terrain including Himalayan foothills in Uttarakhand and Sikkim, plains in Bihar and UP, and forest areas in West Bengal. The open border policy means citizens of both countries can cross freely, making monitoring extremely complex. SSB Constables face challenges like controlling smuggling of gold, cattle, fake currency, and narcotics; preventing human trafficking; managing encroachments; and coordinating with Nepal Police and Bhutan Royal Police. The terrain includes flooded Terai areas, dense jungles, and hill passes, requiring varied operational skills.

SSB physical standards match standard CAPF requirements: Male candidates need 165 cm height (170 cm for candidates from certain hilly states), chest 80 cm unexpanded with 5 cm expansion, and proportionate weight. Female candidates need 157 cm minimum height. The PET includes 5 km run in 24 minutes for males and 1.6 km in 8.30 minutes for females, plus long jump and 100-metre sprint. SSB does not have as extreme high-altitude requirements as ITBP, but the Himalayan foothills posting in Sikkim and Uttarakhand requires basic hill fitness.

SSB was raised in 1963 (originally as Special Service Bureau) for psychological operations and winning hearts and minds of border populations in the Himalayan belt. This civic-action tradition continues — SSB runs free medical camps, veterinary camps, educational programs, and sports activities in border villages of Nepal and Bhutan border areas. SSB also runs Boarding Schools (Bal Uday) for children of economically weaker border communities. This development-security dual role creates a unique work culture compared to combat-focused CAPFs like CRPF and BSF.
