UCEED consists of two parts. Part A is computer-based with three question types: MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) with +3/-1 marking, NAT (Numerical Answer Type) with +3/0, and VST (Visual Sensitivity Test) with up to 60 marks based on subjective evaluation. Part B is a drawing-based question evaluated offline by IIT Bombay. Total duration is 3 hours.

UCEED scores are accepted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, and IIITDM Jabalpur for their BDes programs. IIT Bombay is the most sought-after destination among UCEED qualifiers. Seats are limited, making UCEED highly competitive despite it being relatively newer than other entrance exams.

UCEED leads to BDes programs at IITs and focuses more on analytical, logical, and cognitive design thinking through computer-based testing. NID DAT leads to programs at National Institutes of Design and places greater emphasis on traditional drawing, craft skills, and studio-based evaluation. Both are competitive, but UCEED leans more towards rational problem-solving in design contexts.

Drawing ability is tested in Part B of UCEED and can fetch significant marks. While you do not need to be a trained artist, the ability to visualise and communicate ideas through sketches is important. Practice quick sketching, perspective drawing, and visual storytelling. Part A can be prepared without drawing skills, but a strong Part B score can make the difference for shortlisting.

A candidate can attempt UCEED a maximum of 2 consecutive times. This means you need to plan your preparation carefully and ideally qualify in your first attempt. The limited attempts make it important to be thoroughly prepared before appearing. Most successful candidates begin preparing 12–18 months in advance.
