What is the GATE MN syllabus?

GATE MN covers Mine Development and Surveying; Geomechanics and Ground Control; Mining Methods and Machinery; Surface Environment, Mine Ventilation and Underground Hazards; and Mine Economics, Mine Planning and Systems Engineering — plus Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude.

Which PSUs recruit through GATE MN?

Coal India (and subsidiaries like ECL, CCL, WCL), NMDC, NLC India, HCL (Hindustan Copper), MOIL, and Singareni Collieries (SCCL) recruit mining engineers via GATE. Coal India's Management Trainee intake is the largest.

What is the GATE MN qualifying cutoff?

General qualifying marks: 29.5 (2026), 30.6 (2025) and 25 (2024). Mine ventilation and geomechanics questions dominate the difficulty, so strong fundamentals there usually mean clearing the cutoff comfortably.

Is GATE MN only for mining graduates?

Primarily yes — the syllabus assumes mining-specific coursework. Candidates from mechanical or civil engineering can attempt it, but they must self-study the mining core (ventilation, strata control, mine legislation).

What is the DGMS certification route after GATE MN?

GATE MN qualifies you for MTech programmes, after which mining graduates pursue DGMS statutory exams (First Class and Second Class Manager certificates) — the standard career ladder to Colliery/Area manager roles in Indian mining companies.

Expert Preparation Tips

Mine Ventilation (networks, fans, methane drainage) is the highest-weightage section — start here

Geomechanics numericals (pillar strength, subsidence) follow standard formulas — drill previous questions

Memorise the Mines Act, Coal Mines Regulations and CMR 2017 highlights for the legislation-based questions

Mining methods questions are diagram-driven — practice sketching bord-and-pillar and longwall layouts

Solve 10 years of GATE MN papers; many numericals repeat with changed numbers
