Question 1

What is WBJEE and which colleges accept the score?

Accepted Answer

WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) is conducted annually by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board for admission to undergraduate engineering, technology, pharmacy, and architecture programmes. The score is valid for all government and private engineering colleges in West Bengal, including Jadavpur University, IIEST Shibpur, and numerous other state institutions. Certain deemed universities in West Bengal also accept WBJEE scores alongside JEE Main ranks.

Question 2

What is the marking scheme for WBJEE?

Accepted Answer

WBJEE has a unique three-category marking scheme. Category 1 questions carry +1 mark for correct answers with a -0.25 penalty for wrong answers. Category 2 questions carry +2 marks with -0.50 for incorrect responses. Category 3 questions are multiple-correct type carrying +2 marks with no negative marking, but partial marks are awarded for partially correct answers. Understanding this pattern is crucial for exam strategy, particularly around guessing on Category 3 questions.

Question 3

How many seats are available through WBJEE?

Accepted Answer

WBJEE provides access to approximately 30,000+ engineering seats across 150+ colleges in West Bengal. This includes premier institutions like Jadavpur University (top-ranked state technical university), IIEST Shibpur (formerly BE College, one of the oldest engineering institutions in Asia), and numerous NITs and state-funded colleges. Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering are among the most popular branches with high cutoffs.

Question 4

Is WBJEE harder than JEE Main?

Accepted Answer

WBJEE is generally considered to be of moderate to high difficulty, comparable to JEE Main in many respects but with a more syllabus-focused approach aligned with the West Bengal Higher Secondary curriculum. The Mathematics section in WBJEE is known to be particularly challenging and concept-heavy. Many students preparing for JEE Main find WBJEE manageable with additional practice on WB-specific topics. Numerical accuracy and conceptual clarity are more critical in WBJEE than trick-based solving.

Question 5

Can students from outside West Bengal appear for WBJEE?

Accepted Answer

Yes, students from any state in India can appear for WBJEE. However, the majority of seats are reserved for West Bengal domicile candidates. A certain percentage of seats in private colleges are open to all-India candidates. Students who have studied from any recognised board in India and meet the eligibility criteria (PCM in Class 12) can register for WBJEE. The exam is entirely in English, which is accessible to candidates from across the country.
