APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, established under the APEDA Act 1985. It promotes exports of scheduled products including fresh fruits and vegetables, processed food, cereals, meat, poultry, dairy, and organic products. WTO Agreements, particularly the SPS Agreement and TBT Agreement, govern the phytosanitary and technical standards that India's agricultural exports must meet. APEDA works to ensure that Indian exporters comply with importing country standards, such as EU MRL (Maximum Residue Limits) for pesticides, Japan's positive list system for food additives, and USA FDA regulations. When an importing country raises a WTO SPS notification that impacts Indian exports (e.g., EU restriction on certain pesticides in basmati rice), APEDA leads the industry coordination response. Understanding these WTO mechanisms is essential for APEDA exam preparation.

APEDA's scheduled products include rice (basmati and non-basmati – India's largest agri export), wheat, other cereals, fresh fruits (mango, grapes, pomegranate, banana), vegetables, floriculture, processed foods (pickles, chutneys, fruit pulp, frozen vegetables), organic products, meat (buffalo meat – India is the world's largest buffalo meat exporter), poultry, dairy, and alcoholic beverages. APEDA manages the Basmati Rice GI certification and actively promotes GI products like Darjeeling tea, Alphonso mango, and Nagpur orange in export markets.
