WB JEXPO is the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination for admission to 3-year diploma programs in engineering and technology at polytechnic institutes across West Bengal. It is conducted by the West Bengal Board of Technical Education and offers admission to over 100,000 seats across government and private polytechnics. The exam has two papers: Paper 1 (Mathematics) and Paper 2 (Physical Science covering Physics and Chemistry). Each question carries 2 marks (unlike most states where it's 1 mark), so the total marks are 200 for 100 questions. There is a separate VOCLET exam for lateral entry.

Both exams are conducted by WBBTE. JEXPO has a larger number of seats and applicants compared to VOCLET. The syllabus for JEXPO is Class 10 level while VOCLET covers ITI or Class 12 vocational syllabus.

The top polytechnic colleges for JEXPO qualified students include Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology Kolkata, Calcutta Polytechnic, Asansol Polytechnic, Jalpaiguri Polytechnic, and Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology. Government polytechnics in major cities offer the best infrastructure and placement records. The Kolkata-based polytechnics have strong industry connections with companies in manufacturing, IT, and infrastructure. Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science branches are the most competitive and require high JEXPO scores. Reservation-based seats for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, and EWS categories are available as per WB government norms.

Mathematics carries 50% of the marks and is typically harder, so give it 60% of your preparation time. Physical Science (Physics + Chemistry) covers the remaining 50%. In Physical Science, Physics numericals are more calculation-intensive while Chemistry requires memorization of reactions and properties. Start preparation 3–4 months before the exam. Spend 2 hours daily on Mathematics focusing on Class 10 WBBSE syllabus topics. Dedicate 1 hour each to Physics and Chemistry. Weekly mock tests help track progress. The WB Board Class 10 textbooks are the primary source as JEXPO questions are closely aligned with WBBSE curriculum.

Diploma holders from WB polytechnics can apply for Junior Engineer posts in WBSEDCL (West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company), WBHIDCO, KMC (Kolkata Municipal Corporation), and various state PWD departments. PSUs like WBPDCL, DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation), and Coal India recruit heavily from West Bengal polytechnic graduates. Private sector employment is abundant in Kolkata's manufacturing belt, chemical industries in Haldia, and IT hardware companies. Many graduates pursue lateral entry to B.Tech at WBUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology). Entrepreneurship in fabrication, electrical installation, and repair services is also a viable option.
