Assam Rifles, raised in 1835 as the Cachar Levy, is India's oldest paramilitary force with nearly 190 years of service history. Initially formed to protect the tea estates of Assam from raids, the force evolved through the British era and continued post-independence as a border guarding and internal security force. Today, Assam Rifles guards the 1,643 km Myanmar border and conducts counter-insurgency operations in northeast India — the states of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam. The force has the unique distinction of being under dual command — Ministry of Home Affairs for recruitment and pay, and Ministry of Defence/Indian Army for operational command.

Assam Rifles Rifleman (Technical) handles technical support roles in the force — covering trades like Vehicle Mechanic, Electrician, Radio Operator, Cook, Nursing Assistant, and Storekeeper. Technical Riflemen maintain the operational readiness of the unit's equipment and provide support services. Given the remote posting in northeast India's difficult terrain — dense jungles, monsoon-flooded rivers, and hilly areas — the ability to repair equipment in the field is critical. Riflemen also participate in border patrolling and civic action programs that have earned Assam Rifles the nickname "Friends of the North East."

Assam Rifles Rifleman Technical recruitment is done through the SSC GD Constable exam. The Computer-Based Test (100 questions, 90 minutes) tests GS, Maths, Reasoning, and English/Hindi. After CBT, candidates appear for PST/PET (Physical Standard Test and Physical Efficiency Test), Medical Examination, and Document Verification. Additionally, trade-specific tests may be conducted for Technical posts to verify claimed skills. The force gives preference to candidates from northeast Indian states (Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sikkim) due to operational relevance.

Assam Rifles Rifleman starts at Rs. 21,700 (Level 3) plus allowances including DA, HRA/free accommodation, ration money, and operational area allowances. Northeast India postings attract Counter Insurgency (CI) operations allowance. The force provides a unique dual benefit — civilian pay scales from MHA and operational deployment support from the Army, giving access to Army cantonment facilities, hospitals (Military hospitals), and canteen stores. Long service awards and gallantry medals for operations are additional recognition channels.

Assam Rifles operates in some of India's most challenging terrain and operational environments. The Myanmar border passes through dense tropical jungle, mountain ranges, and flood-prone river valleys. Personnel must be prepared for high rainfall (Cherrapunji receives 11,000+ mm annually), tropical diseases (malaria, dengue), and insurgent threats from various militant groups in northeast India.
