Assam Polytechnic Admission Merit (PAM) for Diploma Programs

Assam PAM (Polytechnic Admission Merit) is the entrance-cum-merit test conducted by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) for admission to diploma engineering programs in polytechnic institutes in Assam. The exam is based on Class 10 level Mathematics and Science. After results, ASTEC conducts centralized counseling where candidates fill in preferences for colleges and branches. Government polytechnics in Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar, and Tezpur are the most sought after. The diploma programs lead to qualification recognized by AICTE and NCVT.

Yes, Assam provides lateral entry admission for ITI certificate holders to the second year of diploma programs. ITI holders with NCVT or SCVT certification in relevant trades can apply for lateral entry seats. The lateral entry process is also managed by ASTEC through a separate merit list based on ITI marks. The number of lateral entry seats is limited (typically 10–15% of total intake). Priority is given to ITI candidates whose trade matches the diploma branch — for example, Electrician ITI trade holders get preference for Electrical Engineering diploma lateral entry. This pathway allows skilled workers to upgrade their qualifications efficiently.
