Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — Architecture and Planning

GATE AR (Architecture and Planning) is the GATE paper for architecture graduates. A good GATE AR score qualifies candidates for M.Arch and M.Plan admissions at IITs, NITs, SPA Delhi, CEPT, and other top institutions. GATE AR scores are also used for recruitment to architecture positions in public sector undertakings (PSUs) like CPWD, HUDCO, AAI, and Railways. The score is valid for 3 years.

GATE AR covers: Architecture and Design (design process, graphics, scale, building elements), Urban Design and Planning (town planning, housing, transportation, smart cities), Building Materials and Construction (materials science, structural systems, environmental control), Environmental Science (climate-responsive design, green building, disaster management), and General Aptitude (verbal, numerical, analytical). The breadth across architecture and planning requires systematic preparation.

GATE AR follows the standard GATE scoring system. The GATE score is normalised across sessions and scaled to a maximum of 1000. MCQ questions have negative marking (1/3 for 1-mark, 2/3 for 2-mark questions), while Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have no negative marking. Sectional cut-offs may vary by institution during counselling.

IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras all offer M.Arch or M.Plan programs that use GATE AR scores for admission. SPA Delhi, NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, and CEPT Ahmedabad are other highly sought-after destinations for GATE AR qualifiers. Each institute has its own admission process, typically involving GATE score, portfolio, and interview.

GATE AR is considered competitive within its own applicant pool, though the absolute number of test-takers is much smaller than GATE CS or ME. A score of 700+ in GATE AR is generally needed for admission to top IITs. The multidisciplinary nature of the syllabus — spanning design, planning, materials, and environment — requires broad preparation. Many candidates find the planning and environmental sections more challenging than the design sections.
