National Aptitude Test in Architecture

NATA 2027 consists of two parts conducted in a single session of 3 hours. Part A is a computer-based test covering Mathematics and General Aptitude with 118 questions of 1.5 marks each. Part B involves two drawing questions evaluated offline for a total of 40 marks, testing the ability to sketch, create compositions, and visualise architectural spaces. The total is 200 marks.

NATA is the mandatory qualifying test conducted by the Council of Architecture for admission to B.Arch programs in most architecture colleges in India. Some IITs use JEE Advanced + AAT scores instead. NIT architecture programs use JEE Main Paper 2 (B.Arch) scores. However, for the majority of private and government architecture colleges, NATA is the required qualifying examination.

The drawing section tests the ability to sketch three-dimensional forms and spatial compositions from given information, depict day-to-day scenes with proper use of scale and perspective, and illustrate concepts and emotions through visual art. Evaluators look for originality, neatness, proper use of the drawing space, proportions, light and shadow, and creative expression. Practice is the only way to improve drawing scores.

Important mathematics topics for NATA include algebra (quadratic equations, progressions), geometry (2D and 3D), co-ordinate geometry, trigonometry, probability, and basic calculus. The level is Class 11–12 NCERT standard. Questions test application of mathematical concepts in architectural and visual contexts, not just abstract problem solving.

No, Mathematics is a mandatory subject in Class 12 for NATA eligibility. Students who studied Biology instead of Mathematics in Class 12 are not eligible for B.Arch programs or NATA. This is a Council of Architecture requirement and cannot be waived. Students who wish to pursue architecture must have Mathematics at the Class 12 level.
