Indian Railway Management Service Exam via UPSC

IRMS (Indian Railway Management Service) is a Group A Gazetted Officer-level service in Indian Railways, recruited through UPSC — the same body that conducts IAS/IPS exams. It replaced the earlier eight separate railway services (IRTS, IRSE, IRSME, IRSS, etc.) by merging them into a single integrated service. Unlike RRB exams which recruit Group B/C staff, IRMS recruits officers who manage railway divisions, projects, and departments at senior levels.

IRMS is selected through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by UPSC, which consists of Prelims (GS Paper 1 + CSAT), Mains (9 papers including GS, Essay, and optional subjects), and a Personality Test (Interview). IRMS aspirants choose technical optional subjects related to civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering based on their preferred railway department. Final selection and service allocation depend on rank and preference.

IRMS officers start at the Junior Time Scale (Level 10) with a basic pay of ₹56,100 per month. With DA, HRA, and other allowances, the starting gross salary is approximately ₹80,000–₹1,00,000 per month. Officers progress to Senior Time Scale, Selection Grade, and Super Time Scale, eventually reaching the apex scale equivalent to Joint Secretary level. IRMS officers also get government housing, official vehicles, and full medical coverage.

IRMS officers are subject to medical examination conducted by UPSC-appointed medical boards. The standards are broadly similar to Indian Administrative Service (IAS) requirements — good general health, adequate vision (correctable), no disabling physical conditions, and fitness for all-India service duties. The specific medical standards are published in UPSC notifications annually and candidates should verify the current requirements before applying.

IRMS vacancies form a subset of the total Civil Services vacancies announced by UPSC each year. Typically, 50–150 IRMS vacancies are released annually across civil, mechanical, electrical, signal & telecom, accounts, traffic, and personnel departments. The exact number varies based on retirements and expansion needs of Indian Railways. Candidates must rank sufficiently high in the Civil Services merit list and indicate IRMS preference.
