The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) guards India's 3,488 km border with China (Tibet) across some of the world's most challenging terrain — from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to the Diphu Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. ITBP Constable GD personnel patrol mountain passes at altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,750 feet in sub-zero temperatures, guard border outposts, conduct reconnaissance missions, and assist in disaster relief during landslides and floods in the Himalayan region. ITBP is also India's premier mountaineering force, with personnel trained in ice climbing, glacier traversal, and high-altitude survival.

ITBP physical standards are similar to other CAPFs but the actual service demands extraordinary fitness. Male candidates need 165 cm height (170 cm for certain hilly regions), 80 cm chest (unexpanded) with 5 cm expansion. The PET includes 5 km run in 24 minutes for males and 1.6 km in 8.30 minutes for females. However, ITBP-specific physical training after recruitment includes high-altitude acclimatization, load carrying on mountain terrain, rescue techniques, and exposure to -40°C conditions. ITBP has its own Mountaineering and Skiing Institute in Auli, Uttarakhand.

ITBP Constable GD recruitment is done through the SSC GD Constable exam — the same exam that recruits for CRPF, BSF, CISF, SSB, and Assam Rifles. The CBT has 100 questions in 90 minutes: 25 questions each from General Knowledge, Maths, Reasoning, and English/Hindi. The exam is Computer-Based and conducted at examination centres across India. Qualifying in the CBT leads to PST/PET, followed by medical examination and document verification.

ITBP is unique in three ways: First, it guards the world's highest and most difficult terrain — the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges. Second, it is a specialized mountaineering and disaster management force — ITBP personnel were among the first responders in the 2013 Kedarnath disaster and multiple Himalayan rescue operations. Third, ITBP has a strong focus on yogic health and sports — the force won multiple Olympic and Commonwealth medals through its athletes. ITBP personnel also participate in Antarctic research expeditions and international mountain rescue operations.

ITBP Constable GD starts at Rs. 21,700 (Level 3) plus allowances. Border area and high-altitude postings attract special allowances: High Altitude Allowance (Rs. 1,060-25,000 per month depending on altitude), Hard Area Allowance, and Siachen Glacier Allowance for the highest altitude postings. Total compensation including all allowances can reach Rs. 45,000-55,000 per month for high-altitude posts. ITBP also provides free accommodation, medical facilities, and special food rations for high-altitude nutrition requirements.
