Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination for MPhil/PhD Research Programs

JNUEE is now conducted by NTA as a CBT with 100 questions worth 400 marks (4 marks per question, −1 penalty). The paper consists of domain-specific subject questions and a research aptitude section testing understanding of research methods, academic writing, and critical analysis. Different schools (Social Sciences, Life Sciences, International Studies, Physical Sciences, Language, Literature) have separate papers. The exam is conducted twice a year in some schools and once a year for others.

These candidates still appear for an interview but do not need to clear the written entrance. This provision recognizes that JRF-qualified candidates have already demonstrated research aptitude through a national-level competitive examination and need not repeat a domain test.

JNU's School of Life Sciences (SLS) is highly competitive and offers PhD programs in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Structural Biology, and Developmental Biology. SLS has state-of-the-art research facilities and consistently publishes in high-impact international journals. The school selects candidates through JNUEE written test followed by a research interview. CSIR/DBT/ICMR JRF holders can directly apply for interview. SLS has a very high research output per faculty and strong PhD alumni network.

Candidates shortlisted through JNUEE are called for an interview/viva conducted by the respective school's faculty committee. The interview tests conceptual understanding, research aptitude, and the candidate's ability to formulate a research question in their area of interest. For Social Sciences and Humanities, the interview may involve discussing contemporary debates in the field. The final merit list is based on 75% weight to written test and 25% to interview performance (weightage varies by school).
