KVS PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) is for teaching Classes XI and XII across 1200+ Kendriya Vidyalayas in India and abroad under the Ministry of Education. Unlike TGT which requires a graduate degree, PGT mandates a postgraduate (Master's) degree in the relevant subject. The pay scale for PGT is higher than TGT, and the role involves teaching senior secondary students who are preparing for board exams and competitive entrance tests. The syllabus depth is greater due to the postgraduate-level subject paper.

KVS PGT consists of 100 questions in 150 minutes with no negative marking. The paper has three sections: Subject Content at postgraduate level (60 marks), Teaching Methodology & Pedagogy (30 marks), and General Studies & Current Affairs (10 marks). The subject section tests advanced concepts beyond NCERT, requiring candidates to have a thorough understanding of their Master's level curriculum. The exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode and requires careful time management.

Candidates must possess a Master's degree in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks from a recognised university, along with a B.Ed degree. For subjects like Computer Science, specific programming certifications or MCA/M.Sc. CS qualifications may substitute. The upper age limit is 40 years, with relaxations for reserved categories. Candidates holding a PhD in the relevant discipline have an added advantage during the interview round though the written test remains the primary selection criterion.

Master's level textbooks and university course material form the backbone of the Subject Content section. Revisit standard reference books used during your postgraduate study, such as Irodov for Physics or R.C. Mukherjee for Chemistry. Focus on application-based questions rather than rote learning. Going through CSIR NET and other subject-specific competitive exam papers also helps as these overlap with PGT-level difficulty. Allocate at least 60% of your preparation time to the subject paper.

KVS PGT teachers are central government employees receiving pay as per the 7th Pay Commission (Level 8, approximately Rs. 47,600–1,51,100 per month). Key perks include residential quarters within or near Kendriya Vidyalaya campuses, free/subsidised education for children in KVs, medical benefits under CGHS, pension under NPS, and the opportunity to be posted to embassy schools abroad.
