National Fisheries Development Board Officer Recruitment Exam

The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, headquartered in Hyderabad. NFDB implements schemes for development of fisheries sector including aquaculture, deep sea fishing, post-harvest infrastructure, and fish processing. A recruited officer monitors scheme implementation at the field level, appraises project proposals from state fisheries departments and cooperatives, prepares progress reports, and coordinates with MPEDA, APEDA, and state governments on fisheries development programmes.

The Fisheries Science section covers aquaculture and fish culture techniques (freshwater, brackishwater, and mariculture), fish biology and taxonomy, fisheries management and conservation, fish nutrition and feed formulation, fish health management and disease control, post-harvest technology and value addition, fisheries economics and cooperative management, and government fisheries schemes (PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, Blue Revolution). Marine fisheries ecology, deep sea fishing technology, and inland fisheries management are also important areas.

Key schemes include PM Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) which is the flagship fisheries development scheme with Rs. 20,050 crore investment, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana for food processing including fish processing, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), and the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). NFDB's own programmes on cage culture in reservoirs, recirculatory aquaculture systems (RAS), biofloc technology, and deep-sea fishing vessel subsidy are directly relevant to exam preparation.

Officers recruited to NFDB begin as Project Officers or Technical Officers and work on scheme implementation across coastal and inland states. Career growth is within NFDB's cadre structure up to Director and Deputy CEO levels. NFDB officers also represent India at FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) fisheries committee meetings and coordinate with international organisations like Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP-IGO). The role provides exposure to the Blue Economy policy framework and national fisheries development planning.

Fisheries science has become increasingly attractive with India being the third largest fish-producing country globally with over Rs. 1.7 lakh crore sector value. Government investment through PM Matsya Sampada Yojana has expanded career opportunities in government (NFDB, MPEDA, CMFRI, CIFRI, state fisheries departments), private sector (aquaculture firms, fish processing companies, export houses), and development organisations. B.F.Sc. and M.F.Sc. graduates are in demand across aquaculture, fish seed production, ornamental fish trade, and fisheries extension services.
