What is the GATE BM syllabus?

GATE BM covers Engineering Mathematics; Electrical Circuits and Measurements; Signals and Systems; Analog and Digital Electronics; Sensors and Bioinstrumentation; Human Anatomy and Physiology; Biomechanics; Medical Imaging Systems; Biomaterials; and Rehabilitation Engineering, plus 15 marks of General Aptitude.

Can MBBS or BSc graduates appear for GATE BM?

Yes — the official GATE eligibility list includes MBBS and BSc graduates in specified streams (such as life sciences and allied subjects) alongside engineering graduates. Always cross-check the current brochure's eligibility table for your exact degree.

What is the GATE BM qualifying cutoff?

The General category qualifying mark has been 25 out of 100 in most recent years (25 in 2026 and 2024; 29.2 in 2025). OBC-NCL/EWS is typically 90% of the General cutoff and SC/ST/PwD about two-thirds.

Which institutes accept GATE BM?

IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Hyderabad and IISc run biomedical/bioengineering MTech and PhD programmes that accept GATE BM. AIIMS and ICMR-linked research programmes also recognise it for selected positions.

What careers does GATE BM open?

Medical device R&D (GE Healthcare, Philips, Siemens Healthineers, Trivitron), hospital biomedical engineering departments, regulatory affairs, imaging research, prosthetics/assistive-tech startups, and PhD routes at IITs and overseas universities.

Expert Preparation Tips

Anatomy and Physiology facts are memory-heavy but high-yield — make system-wise one-pagers and revise weekly

Bioinstrumentation bridges electronics and physiology — practise transducer and amplifier numericals

Medical imaging questions (CT reconstruction, MRI physics, ultrasound) repeat patterns from previous papers — solve all BM papers 2020-2026

Signals and Systems overlaps with GATE ECE — reuse standard resources and previous ECE questions

Engineering Mathematics is 13 guaranteed marks — treat it as non-negotiable score
