Question 1

What is HPCET and which institutions accept the score?

Accepted Answer

HPCET (Himachal Pradesh Common Entrance Test) is conducted by Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HIMTU) for admission to BTech and other technical programmes in HP government and private engineering colleges. HIMTU, established in Hamirpur, is the affiliating technical university for all engineering colleges in the state. HPCET score is the primary admission criterion for most Himachal Pradesh engineering colleges, supplemented by Class 12 marks in some institutions.

Question 2

How many engineering seats are available in Himachal Pradesh through HPCET?

Accepted Answer

HPCET covers approximately 10,000+ engineering seats across 30+ engineering colleges in Himachal Pradesh, including government colleges in Hamirpur, Rampur, Solan, and Dharamshala, as well as several private engineering colleges in the state. Himachal Pradesh being a hill state has relatively fewer engineering colleges compared to plains states, but the quality of government colleges is reasonable. NIT Hamirpur (one of the NITs with a scenic campus) uses JEE Main scores, not HPCET.

Question 3

What is the difficulty level of HPCET compared to JEE Main?

Accepted Answer

HPCET is significantly easier than JEE Main and is considered moderate in difficulty. Questions are based on the CBSE/HP Board Class 11 and 12 PCM syllabus, covering fundamental concepts without the tricky application-level problems typical of JEE. Students who are preparing for JEE Main will find HPCET relatively straightforward. The lack of negative marking makes HPCET forgiving, and a solid NCERT preparation is sufficient for scoring well in this exam.

Question 4

Do HP domicile students have seat reservations in HPCET?

Accepted Answer

Yes, HPCET has strong reservations for Himachal Pradesh domicile students. Government engineering colleges in HP reserve 85–90% of seats for HP domicile candidates, with only a small percentage open to all-India applicants. Categories with reservations include SC, ST, OBC, and EWS as per HP state reservation policy. Students from other states can only apply for the limited non-domicile quota seats in private colleges. Domicile certificate must be obtained from the HP district administration.

Question 5

What are the career prospects after studying engineering in Himachal Pradesh?

Accepted Answer

Engineering graduates from HP colleges have diverse career pathways. The state government employs engineers in HPPWD (Public Works Department), HPSEB (State Electricity Board), HIMUDA (Urban Development Authority), and HRTC (Road Transport Corporation). Private sector opportunities are available in IT companies in Chandigarh (nearby), Shimla, and Solan (which has a growing pharma and IT corridor). NIT Hamirpur alumni have a strong placement record in national IT and core engineering companies, setting a benchmark for HP engineering education.
