SSB Sub Inspector is a Group C supervisory officer responsible for commanding a section or platoon of 25-30 personnel at border outposts along the Nepal and Bhutan borders. SI duties include planning and leading border patrols, managing the operations and discipline of the section, coordinating intelligence collection at the border, and implementing community engagement programs in border villages. SSB SIs are also responsible for administrative functions within their unit, including maintaining records, coordinating logistics, and ensuring welfare of personnel under their command. The starting pay is Rs. 35,400 (Level 6).

The SSB SI selection process typically includes: Written Examination (100 questions, 90 minutes covering GS, English, Maths, and Reasoning), Physical Standard Test and Physical Efficiency Test, Medical Examination, and Document Verification. Unlike CAPF AC (which requires UPSC exam and has an officer-level interview), SSB SI is a direct recruitment through written exam and physical tests. For SSB SI Technical posts, additional trade tests may be conducted. The process is similar to CRPF SI, CISF SI, and other CAPF SI recruitments conducted through SSC CPO exam or respective force direct recruitment.

General Studies covers Indian History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science & Technology, and Current Affairs — prepare at graduation level with emphasis on national security, border management, and northeast India. English Language tests grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and précis writing at graduation level. Quantitative Aptitude covers topics like Profit & Loss, Time & Work, Speed-Distance-Time, Algebra, and Basic Statistics. Reasoning Ability covers logical reasoning, critical thinking, data interpretation, and analytical reasoning. The overall difficulty is moderate — Class 12 to graduation level.

Male SSB SI candidates must have minimum height of 165 cm with 77 cm unexpanded chest and 5 cm expansion (82 cm expanded). Female candidates need 157 cm minimum height. Weight must be proportionate to height. The PET includes 5 km run in 24 minutes (male) and 1.6 km in 8 minutes (female), plus long jump, high jump, and 100-metre sprint. The physical standards ensure SSIs can lead physical demanding border patrols in diverse terrain from Terai plains to Himalayan foothills.

SSB Sub Inspector (Level 6) can be promoted to Inspector (Level 7), Deputy Commandant (through Limited Departmental Competitive Exam — LDCE), and potentially to Commandant over a 20-25 year career. Those who qualify the UPSC CAPF AC exam while serving as SI can join as Assistant Commandant, getting a significant accelerated promotion. SSB also conducts departmental promotion exams for SI to Inspector rank. The force's smaller size compared to CRPF and BSF means promotion opportunities may be available at a faster pace.
