Complete Guide 2026 — Pattern, Dates, Eligibility & Preparation
JEE Advanced is the gateway to all 23 IITs in India. This complete guide covers exam pattern, marks vs rank, syllabus, eligibility, and IIT admission process — everything you need to know in one place.
What is JEE Advanced? (Detailed Explanation)
JEE Advanced (formerly IIT-JEE) is the most prestigious engineering entrance examination in India. It serves as the sole gateway for admission to all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian School of Mines (IIT Dhanbad). JEE Advanced is conducted once a year by the IITs on a rotational basis.
Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main qualify to appear for JEE Advanced. This makes JEE Advanced an elite exam — approximately 1 in every 5 JEE Main candidates gets to appear, and only about 1 in 4 of those qualifies for IIT admission.
JEE Advanced full form: Joint Entrance Examination Advanced. It replaced the former IIT-JEE format in 2013 when the two-tier JEE system was introduced.
The exam consists of two compulsory papers — Paper 1 and Paper 2 — each 3 hours long. Both papers cover Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a complex variable marking scheme including partial marks, negative marks, and integer-type questions. Total exam duration is 6 hours.
JEE Advanced tests conceptual depth, multi-concept problem-solving, and time management at a level far beyond JEE Main. A student who scores 99 percentile in JEE Main may score only 40–50% in JEE Advanced due to the difference in difficulty and question style.
